Newspaper Shoes

Last night we went to see the Broadway show Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which was fantastic. I’ve never been a huge fan of Christopher Durang’s work, but am in love with his writing on this one. Here’s the New York Times review, if you’re curious.

On the way home, we got caught in a little rain. I was wearing my newest shoe obsession, Jeffrey Campbell’s Regina Wedge, so I wanted to take care of them right away to keep the leather from curling up in the open peep toe.

We have been told how important it is to take very good care of everything one owns so that those lovely things last longer, but wet shoes are often forgotten about, so it’s worth pointing out that there is a simple fix. Just knowing this trick makes me more aware of my shoe care, which is very important for someone who loves her shoes. The newspaper helps soak up the water, keeping the leather from sitting damp for as long as it otherwise might, and also helps with holding the shape of the shoe. If the peep toe is wider, or the back is open, the shoe can be strapped to a hardcover book with a rubber band to keep the shape. Just be sure to protect the book from the wet soles. In this case, the newspaper was enough to keep the shape of this pair. I find this trick to be very useful in the summer months when getting caught in leather sandals and a rain shower seems to happen somewhat frequently.

If you’ll indulge me on a different topic, these shoes are wonderful. They go with nearly everything in my closet, including one knee-length silk dress with flowing layers which has been tough to pair shoes with in the past. They’re high, so my legs look long even with the ankle strap, but the wedge, the ankle strap, and the small peep toe make them comfortable to walk in for blocks. At first I was unsure about the color, but it’s grown on me, and now I cannot imagine loving another color as much – it is surprising how many colorful summer dresses will go with such an odd shade of green.

I first saw them on Cup of Jo, who found them in a post on Oh Happy Day. I couldn’t help but share the love for them too.
