Wish List: Yakkay Bicycle Helmet

Paris Herringbone & Luzern White Yakkay Helmets
After doing a cost analysis of MetroCard vs. Citi Bike for commuting this summer, I decided to take the plunge and buy the annual membership for Citi Bike.

I have always wanted to bike around New York City, but have been too fearful of the dangerous streets, and I worried about where I could keep a bicycle safely – nearly everyone I know who has a bike in the city has had it stolen at least once. I’m very excited about this program because with more bikes on the road, drivers will get used to seeing bicycles, and that will make cycling safer for everyone. Also, since one borrows the bicycles, I no longer need to worry about it being stolen.

Sadly, I have yet to receive my key because the program has been so popular that they are a bit backed up. But on the bright side, I have been able to use this time to do a bit of helmet window shopping. I’m not looking forward to wearing a helmet, but I do recognize the obvious importance. Besides the way they smash one’s hair, and how much space they take up, bike helmets are always so utilitarian and sporty looking. I just have always disliked them.

Nevertheless, I had planned to use the $10 helmet coupon annual members receive to purchase the least expensive helmet I could find. After all, as long as the fit is correct, helmets basically perform the same way. Here is one inexpensive helmet I found.

But then I came across the Danish beauty Yakkay, and it has landed squarely at the top of my wish list. I’m sure I fell in love with this style because it reminds me a little of a riding helmet. I’m going to hope the classic riding helmet style will make it worth the higher price tag by not feeling dated in a few years.

My newest obsession: Yakkay
The helmet looks urban and cool on its own, and comes in several colors. But one of the brilliant features of this helmet is that the covers can be switched out. Here are a few of the options.

As far as I can find, only one shop sells them in the city: Adeline Adeline on Reade Street. I’m planning on heading there soon, as this design is almost making me excited to wear a bike helmet. I cannot wait to start commuting by bicycle -- here's hoping my Citi Bike key arrives soon.

  1. One of the most important elements of the safety gear for motocross riders is, of course, the motocross helmet. modular motorcycle helmets
