The Best Things in Life are Free

Met Opera for free at Lincoln Center
Getting out of town for long weekends is always a refreshing escape, but if you'll be in the city this Labor Day Weekend,  there are a ton of wonderful free options to squeeze in around barbecues and picnics in Central Park. Here are a few free events in NYC to choose from that look fun.

UNIQLO Free Fridays at MoMa
4:00 pm to 8:00 pm - Friday
Just in case the weather doesn't hold for outdoor activities, MoMa is always a good place to spend a Friday night. And since it's a holiday weekend, it might even be less crowded.

Free Music Fridays at American Folk Art Museum
5:30 pm - Friday
American Folk Art Museum has one of my favorite museum gift shops, so I would get there early to take a peek, and then head to the bar to buy a glass of wine. Tonight's performances will be by local singer and songwriter Lindsay Dragan (Melodic singer/songwriter), Nathan Xander (Dark, restrained folk), and The Broken Crowns (Indie pop harmonies).

Metropolitan Opera Summer HD Festival
7:30 pm / 8:00 pm - Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday
Have you ever arrived late to the Met and been forced to watch the first act on screen from the late seating viewing room? If you have, I will bet you never, ever arrived late again. This festival is absolutely nothing like that experience -- the screen is huge, the speakers are fantastic, and the atmosphere is friendly.

Harlem Shakespeare Festival presents Shakespeare's Antony & Cleopatra
7:00 pm - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
While The Public's Shakespeare in the Park is between performances, one can still find free Shakespeare a little further uptown. Performances are at the Waterfront Amphitheatre at Riverbank State Park (at 145th and Riverside), so it's almost like getting out of the city and being at the water, but with Shakespeare.

The Limón Dance Company at Bryant Park
10:00 am - Saturday
Limón Dance Company always gives beautiful and creative performances, so it would be fun to take a class in the park with them.

Central Park Conservatory Garden
8:00 am to dusk.
If one needs to find a quiet place to escape to this weekend, the Conservatory Garden is a perfect place to explore.

Adrian Paci, Selected Works on the High Line
I love the ever evolving public art in New York, and the High Line is such a great walk -- every time I'm there I enjoy the departure from the busy streets, the history, and trying to peek into DVF's apartment above her shop. This will give me something new to look at.

Whatever you have planned, I hope you have a lovely Labor Day Weekend!
