Here in the North East, we had a beautiful bit of weather last weekend. Up until that point, I had been enjoying the winter weather -- it's fun to get a ton of snow when someone else shovels the sidewalk and taking the subway means not worrying about potholes -- but after that little tease of warmth, I'm suddenly thinking of spring flowers, Central Park picnics, and warm sandy beaches.

It's important to not get too ahead of the calendar, or the next month of winter coats will be like watching a pot of water never boil. However, as that becomes easier said than done at some point each year during the winter months, it may be time to start planning for a summer vacation.

When you go on vacation, do you save up for it first? As opposed to putting everything on a credit card? Maybe not... We all know that saving up first is the smartest way to go, but even knowing this, we don't all do it.

But do you search for a good deal on a flight or hotel?

Maybe... With the overwhelming choices of discount services out there, more often than not, we take a look for a deal. No one wants to feel as if she lost out, so we take a look.

But here's the thing: A great discount for a flight or hotel doesn't really mean saving money if the credit card isn't paid off right away. That savings turns into credit card interest, and the longer it takes to pay the credit card, the more expensive the trip becomes, negating any savings (along with time and effort spent looking for a deal) initially found.

So as those thoughts of warmer weather start to creep in over the next few weeks, the warm weather days that tease us can also act as gentle reminders that now is a great time to start saving up for a summer getaway. If the trip is paid for in advance, it really will be a relaxing escape.
